california in a nutshell

I need to make an online appointment at the DMV. This is the states homepage breaking news. Very Californian….

“Due to the State’s fiscal emergency, all DMV Offices will be closed on the following Fridays – July 10, 17, and 24, 2009

Drive tests will not be administered at the Los Angeles field office on Tuesday, July 7, 2009, in light of the Michael Jackson Memorial Service at the Staple Center. Drive tests are being rescheduled and redirected to neighboring offices.

The Hollywood field office will be closed on Friday, July 10, 2009 for renovations and will reopen at 8 a.m. on Monday, August 24, 2009.”

Hollywood gets a remodel, a superstar disrupts life for regular folks in LA, and the rest of the state is shutting down.

  1. If you had to choose a government agency to shut down a couple of days a week, what would you choose? DMV is pretty good. I like mail delivery, too. Not the office that let’s you off easy on parking tickets, though. That place is always busy.

  2. i would shut down the governors press office. then the press would be more justified for their salaries and investigative journalism might be spurred on. Or I would get rid of street cleaning and try to instill a sense of civic pride so every morning people went out and swept up shit off the street in front of their own homes. They could dump their dustpan in the city garbage can on the corner.

  3. I should say, once a week people swept. that’s all the city does.

  4. Wow, I don’t think we have regular street sweeping in Milwaukee but I could be wrong. One time after a local festival a lady got swept up by a sweeper; the driver thought she was a bag of trash.

I like the idea of shutting down press offices. Then every bit of news would feel like a scandal.

  5. Street sweeping is a cash cow. It’s a $45 (or is it up to 60 now?) dollar ticket if you don’t move your car during the posted hours. Once a week for every street. This is a really windy city on 7 huge hills. Garbage rolls downhill and blows into the ocean. Street sweeping is not necessary.
