80′s revival

This could be a picture of my bedroom growing up. I mean same color walls, same Hulk poster, and I had a Nerf hoop over the bedroom door. I even rode a Huffy Desperado. The back of the photo says, “Randy E. playing nerf hoop at our house 1984.” Another picture from the album shows a Red Sox team photo on his wall that came every year in the Boston Globe which I had too. My only question is, what band is on that poster to his left?

  1. I think it’s a poster from Bruce Brown’s “On Any Sunday”

  2. I don’t know who the band is, but I’m pretty darn sure it’s the inside of an album cover, in case that jars a memory for someone :)

  3. Maybe the Doobie Brothers.

  4. Doobie Brothers had a black guy in the band. It does look like an album cover but where would you keep the record, then?

I can’t tell for sure but I’m going to throw some reasoning out there and then give my best guess.

    1. Lots of mustaches in this picture. Baseball was still rockin’ the ‘stache hard in ’84 but the music industry was way past it (except Michael McDonald, to close out the Doobie Brothers content of this comment). We’re probably talking about a group from the mid to late seventies, judging by head and facial hair.

    2. How many mid to late seventies bands were you into in 1984 (or ever, for that manner)? For me, it was the Police, Michael Jackson, Van Halen, Quiet Riot, Weird Al Yankovic, and whatever else was on top 40. There’s probably a special reason this kid liked this band.

    3. Clearly, we have some Celtics fans in the house and I’d bet serious money this house is in the Boston suburbs. For all I know I played Nerf Hoops with these guys. Anyhow, they seem to like stuff from Boston.

So, my guess is the band on the wall is…. BOSTON! Now, I realize that the number of pictures exceeds the count of band members but it wouldn’t surprise me at all if Brad Delp, who was egomaniacal to the point that it took Boston 8 years to release their third album, would put his picture on there twice. Side note, it appears that Delp killed himself in Atkinson, NH last year. Anyhow, I can match up every band member believably with a photo in this poster. So I’m going with Boston.

  6. I agree that it’s Brad Delp in the upper right (you mean the poster to the nerf hooper’s right, right?) His fro is what takes up all the black space in the poster, IMO. Those other guys are just struggling to stay above the total hair conspiracy of the Delp fro. They’re swimming in it, as though they’re Titanic survivors. And in the end the only victim was Delp himself. Apropos, non? So sad…

  7. Lyle, you should win an award for that well thought out post. More thought and intelligence in that response than in the last four or more of my posts. Maybe you want to be a guest blogger for a week, like they do on BoingBOing? Or anybody for that matter. I’ve been thinking about all the white space on the right hand side of my homepage. Maybe that could be links to other peoples pages on this site. If anyone wants to do that, let me know. I’ll build a page for you and a link on the homepage and you can write whenever you want. It’d be nice if you update at least twice a week though. Anybody interested? Mitch? A new orleans librarian page? Pooperlooper? Sarah? Poll? Any strangers out there?

  9. I think the Greenland kids started a few developmentally crucial years earlier.

  10. Let’s not forget that the Woodlands kids account for 1 murder and 3 suicides, to date. And that’s just the stuff I know about. Plenty of dumb-asses in the Woodlands.

Oh, and Joe Coronati fell off a roof and broke his back in college. Now that’s stupid!

  11. it looks more like e.l.o. to me. i think one band member’s head is obscured by randy’s head.
