“My Horse Shades, He Was A Good Horse” – jon wayne
Colic grabs a horse and kills ‘em quick. Their insides get twisted up and they die. But what do you do with a dead horse, after you’re done crying over him? It’s a mighty big hole to dig, and a lot of uncooperative horse to move. So you call somebody with a truck and winch to come by and drag it out of the corral and haul it away. Sometimes that takes a day or two.
That isn’t the victory sign, it is a peace sign, as in “Rest in Peace, Number Seven”.
I almost recognize that hoss. Looks like Rubicon, but that can’t be true. Rubicon was ancient and toothless when I was the sheriff of that town. So that is some other horse whose final days were spent in a dusty paddock. I can say I never gave a horse moldy alfalfa. Looks like someone did.

What’s up with that dead horse’s arse? Is it prolapsed?

This was cowboy bob’s horse. He stayed with it all night till it died. When I got there in the morning there was an empty six pack on an overturned water bucket. I pictured bob nursing those beers as he watched his old trail horse go down. It was sad.
The arse has a little poop coming out. Maybe a little prolapsed too. That was gross.

He still had his winter coat. I will weep for him. At least now he won’t have to worry about warmth.
