These are some examples of late 1970′s technology and graphic design. All these tapes have paper labels glued onto the cartridge rather than the info printed directly onto it. Pay special attention to the tape on the bottom left – a Sony Walkman demonstration tape. I’m guessing this was used at department stores by the sales clerk to show buyers how a Sony Walkman would work. The A side is “Jungle Strut” by The Square, the B side is Symphony No. 8 by Dvorak.
Here are scans of some cases. The TDK case has a date of 1977. No other dates found.
Remeber when the Motley Crue “Theatre of Pain” cassette came out and it was clear. That was the shit!

I forgot how secret level that was. Like the clear Swatch, I could see the mechanics…
Theatre of Pain was the album where they gave up the spikes and dressed like Stevie Nicks, but looked hotter. No wonder it won best female rock album of the year. Everyone was fooled.
And I think that was a Teisco del Ray from the other day. The strange thing about the catalogue, it didn’t say the manufacturer.
Here’s what it said:
“Guitar is so great, its neck, pickups are guaranteed 5 years! Most-wanted features like solo, rhythm, bass selector switch and spring loaded muffler – you double on bass or play lead.”
What the hell are they talking about?

i remember the smell of the theatre of pain.
that ink smell meant metal to me. i’m sure the new wave cassettes smelled the same, but it’s always going to mean metal to my nostrils.
