You’re looking at the word donut written in Cambodian on the single serve pastry to go bag that came with my purchase at Chuck’s Donuts in Redwood City.
The woman behind the counter wasn’t sure how to say donut in Cambodian. She had to think about it…
“We say ‘donut’, there isn’t a Cambodian word for this. Or we say like ‘pastry’.”
I asked her, “What do you tell your friends back there when you say you work at a donut shop?”
“I tell them, ‘blah blah blah blah blah blah donut shop.’”
(blah blah blah reflects my lack of retention for even phonetic sounds of foreign languages)
